IPHONE SE 2020 | PRICE & SPECIFICATIONS | THE BUDGET IPHONE

IPHONE SE 2020 | PRICE & SPECIFICATIONS | THE BUDGET IPHONE

The iPhone SE is a.k.a the iPhone 8. Apple has finally released the iPhone SE 2020. It has the iPhone 11 internals in the body of iPhone 8. When the iPhone SE was released back in 2016, it had the iPhone 6 internals in the body of iPhone 5. Everyone loved it back then. Its compact design was the biggest reason for its huge success.

But this time the form factor which was a hit in 2016 didn't work out like it did the last time. There has been huge advancements in the display of smartphones during these years.

Display:

On the front it is a full black finish for all the colors unlike the iPhone 8, which had a white finish on the front. The black finish makes the phone look like it is of 2020's standards. But as soon as the display is turned on, there are thick bezels on the top and bottom sides.

This is a 4.7” retina display. This is a mediocre display when compared to its competitors like the OnePlus 8, which has a fluid amoled display. The SE 2020’s display is not bad. It is a good retina display. But at this price they could have gone for a notch display which would have been way better.

Build:

iPhone SE 2020 has an excellent build. Apple did not compromise on the build of this smartphone. It hosts a glass sandwich design, which also enables wireless charging. It is to be noted that this phone has IP67 certification for water and dust resistance. This is the only phone to have IP rating at this price segment.

Performance:

The performance is one of the key areas where iPhones never made a compromise. iPhone SE houses the same processor used in current generation iPhones. The A13 bionic is more powerful than the Qualcomm’s latest offering Snapdragon 865. This processor is a beast. It can run any app available on the AppStore and can multitask seamlessly. Since it has the latest processor, this smartphone is expected to receive software updates for atleast 4 years.

Optics :

On the back it has a single camera setup just like the iPhone 8. It has a 12 megapixel f/1.8 aperture camera. It is not sure whether it is the same sensor used in iPhone11 pro. Under good lighting conditions, this camera clicks impressive shots. The skin tones are good and the pictures are bright. But the low light performance of this camera is poor. Apple has not enabled the night mode, even though the processor is capable of it.

On the front it has a 7 megapixel f/2.2 aperture selfie shooter. It takes decent pictures. A good addition is that Apple has enabled portrait mode for both front and rear camera. It is to be noted that  camera versatility is missing on this smartphone when compared to its competitors like the Oneplus 8 , Poco f2 pro. My opinion is that, if this phone had a dual camera setup, it would have been great.

Security:

Apple has brought their touch ID on this phone. This feature is preferred by many people rather than face ID. Touch ID works perfectly fine on this smartphone. It also doubles as a home button.

Price:

Apart from all other features, pricing is an excellent feature of this smartphone. At release, this phone is priced at $399 on the US. Which when converted is around 31,000 INR which is great. But in India this phone is priced at 42500 INR. The price difference between the US and Indian pricing is huge. It would have been better if they had priced this around 35000 INR. Still this is a really good phone. It is the cheapest iPhone Apple has ever released.

Battery

The major disadvantage of this phone is its battery size and battery life. Apple has included a 1821 mah battery. This phone has the capacity to perform a graphic intensive tasks like playing heavy games like PUBG or shooting high resolution videos. During these tasks, the battery is drained easily. While playing PUBG, one percentage of charge is consumed every minute. Even though Apple has enabled wireless charging, they could have gone for a bigger battery.

Advantages:

  • Software update
  • Processor
  • Price
  • Build

Disadvantages:

  • Display
  • Battery life
Conclusion:

Should you consider buying this?

If you want an iPhone with the flagship processor in a slim body that runs the latest software and if you are OK with this mediocre battery, then this smarphone is definitely for you.

In my opinion, if you are a serious gamer, then you can look out for a other options like the Oneplus 8 which is a better value for money option on the Android side of things.

If you are an Apple user who got used to the iPhone 6 & 7's design and don't want to come out of it, you will not regret buying this smartphone.
